The American Library Association (ALA) has established a brand new section devoted to all manner of resource sharing activities. The new section is known as STARS, Sharing and Transforming Access to Resources Section, and its committees will sponsor projects, publications, and conference programs in the areas of interlibrary loan, document delivery, remote circulation, access services, cooperative reference, and cooperative collection development. Membership in STARS is open to library staff, both U.S. and international, as well as vendors of resource sharing products and services.

STARS is available for membership effective 1 September 2004. If you would like detailed information on our committees, objectives, and implementation schedule, please go to and click on "STARS". We are very interested in collaborating with our international colleagues and hope that many of you will join ALA/RUSA/STARS ($105 US annually).

If you join STARS, you will be eligible to serve on any of the following committees being formed this year: 1) Interlibrary Loan, 2) International ILL, 3) Education and Training, 4) Legislation and Licensing, 5) Codes, Guidelines, and Technical Standards, or 6) Vendor Relations. Each committee will be working on a number of exciting projects, and you may participate in the committee's work via email even if you are unable to attend the ALA annual conferences. A committee volunteer form is available at - click on "Volunteer" and select the form for Sharing and Transforming Access to Resources Section. NOTE: YOU MUST JOIN ALA AND ITS DIVISION KNOWN AS RUSA IF YOU ARE APPOINTED TO SERVE ON A STARS COMMITTEE.

Committees slated for creation in 2005 include 1) Cooperative Reference, 2) Research and Statistics, 3) Cooperative Collection Development, and 4) Cooperative/Remote Circulation.

If you have any questions about STARS committees or projects, or how you might join and participate, please feel free to contact me at [log in to unmask]
