DATABASE LISTS TOP 100 BOOKS IN LIBRARIES
DUBLIN, Ohio, Oct. 5, 1999--_In Search of Excellence_ is on more library
shelves than any other book, according to a survey of WorldCat (the OCLC
Online Union Catalog), an electronic catalog of materials from libraries in
the United States and other countries.
With 3,971 libraries listed as having it in their collections, the book tops
the list of 100 books held by libraries that catalog their materials on
WorldCat. It has held that position consistently since 1989.
The list, heavy in reference works and nonfiction bestsellers, also has
three children's books--_Owl Moon_, _The Polar Express_ and _The Way Things
Work_.
With four entries, Bob Woodward has authored or co-authored the most titles
on the list--_The Brethren: Inside the Supreme Court_ (17); _The Final
Days_ (38); _Veil: The Secrets of the CIA, 1981-1987_ (44); and _All the
President's Men_ (73).
Some books one would expect to see on the list--such as the Bible and
Shakespeare's works--are missing because there are so many editions, and
different editions are cataloged as separate works.
The top 100 list is based on the holdings of OCLC member libraries, which
include all types of libraries: research, university, public, corporate,
government and school libraries.
Libraries use the bibliographic records in WorldCat to catalog the books in
their collections. When they do, a notation is made in the database, which
is a merged, computerized catalog of the materials in 8,650 libraries around
the world that use the OCLC online cataloging system. Available to libraries
since 1971, WorldCat currently contains 42 million records and 720 million
holding symbols.
WorldCat is available through the OCLC FirstSearch service, an online
reference service some 15,000 libraries provide to their users, both in the
library and remotely.
