Ways to finding the article - evaluation of a bibliographic database
Välkommen att ta del av en magisteruppsats i biblioteks- och
informationsvetenskap. Texten behandlar utvärdering av bibliografiska
databaser och som "försöksobjekt" används Btj:s databas Artikelsök. Nedan i
detta brev följer ett abstract på engelska. Texten i sin helhet finns på

Abstract
Artikelsök, a swedish bibliographic database produced by Bibliotekstjänst,
is described and evaluated in this essay. Implemented in 1984, Artikelsök
today contains over 1 million records and is widely used in both public and
research libraries. The database covers all topics and the main selection
criteria is that the documents must be published in newspapers, magazines
or journals. As subject controling devices both a classification system
(SAB:s klassifikationssystem) and free natural language subject descriptors
are being used. For the description of Artikelsök made in this paper a
model by M. Buckland och C. Plaunt for the analysis of information
retrieval systems is applied. The evaluation consists of two parts. The
first one is descriptive and uses a model for quality measuring developed
by M. & W. Rittberger. The second part is analytical and consists of
calculations of precision and comparative recall from a number of test
searches conducted by the authors. The results are used for analysing the
subject control and the index language in Artikelsök with regard to
different search strategies. Remarks are also made upon the translation
into swedish of some terms in the field of evaluation within the library
and information science.
