Please, stop replying back to the list with the REMOVE commands!!!!
As a reminder, in 99% of the cases REMOVE requests of unsolicited commercial e-mails only CONFIRM to the original sender that your address is correct and you actually read your messages. This only INCREASES the amount of junk mail to you.
When the junk comes to you via a mailing list, such as BIBLIST, there is NOTHING you can do to stop it. The listowner is the only person who is able to restrict messages coming to you via the list.
I have previously requested some simple changes to the list settings (with no reply). These changes would reduce (not eliminate) the amount of junk on the list. I ask you to do the following changes *** immediately *** to increase the technical quality and protection of biblist:
1. restrict the posting access to subscribers only, because now ANYBODY can post anything to the list. change the CURRENT setting of: * Send = Public to these NEW settings: * Send = Editor,Hold * Editor = [log in to unmask], (BIBLIST) (The list is set as editor so that all members of the list can post)
2. change the reply settings of biblist followingly: CURRENT SETTING: * Reply-to = List,Respect NEW SETTING: * Reply-to = Sender,Respect With this setting you would to specifically add the list address when you want to reply to the list, but this prevents the private replies ending up to the list as has happened so many times this year.
3. Change the review access to listowners only: CURRENT setting: * Review = Public NEW: * Review = Owners so that our addresses are not stolen for unwanted commercial activities!
4. Change the subscribtion option so that new subscribers need to confirm. This will decrease the junk mail to listowners, CURRENT: * Subscription = Open NEW: * Subscription = Open, Confirm
This message is mainly targeted to the current listowners but I have posted it publicly because this concerns all subscribers of the list: * Owner= [log in to unmask] (Per Thernquist) * Owner= [log in to unmask] (Ulla Daehli-Martins) * Owner= [log in to unmask] (Birgitta Stevinger)
Yours sincerely, Jarmo Saarikko, information specialist Finnish Forest Research Institute Helsinki, Finland - also a listowner at segate.
