BACKGROUND:
Peking University began as the Metropolitan University (Jing Shi Da Xue Tang) in 1898. In 1912, the University was renamed Peking University. By 1919, it was already China's largest university, and considered by many to be the country's most prestigious institution of higher learning.
Peking University was the center of the 1919 "May 4th Movement." Many of the exponents of the New China, New Culture movement -- Mao Zedong, Chen Duxiu, Lu Xun, to name a few -- either taught or held offices in the University. After the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1952, Peking University became a comprehensive university emphasizing both teaching and research in liberal arts and the sciences. Since 1949, Peking University has granted over 100,000 undergraduate and graduate degrees.
At present, Peking University has 21,500 students, including international students from 62 foreign countries and regions, and a faculty of 2,100.
Peking University Library was founded in 1902, one of the first contemporary libraries established in China. The Library now has the largest collections among China's institutions of higher learning, with a total of 4.5 million volumes. Most notable among its collection is the 1.5 million-volume Rare Book Collection, many of which are unique in the world. In addition, the Library has extensive microform and audiovisual collections CD/ROM and other electronic resources.
The Library maintains gift exchange and interlibrary loan agreements with more than 500 other major libraries and information centers around the world.
The new library building will be completed by October, 1998. Funded by Mr. Li Ka Shing of Hong Kong and supported by the State Education Commission of China and the Beijing municipal government, the new building will provide 50,000 square meters of space spread over 8 stories and will house the most advanced information technologies to facilitate world-class library services and management.
