andra.

Electrifying our cultural heritage

Digitalkoot is a joint project run by the National Library of Finland
and Microtask. Our goal is to index the library's enormous archives so
that they are searchable on the Internet. This will enable everyone to
easily access our cultural heritage.

You can help us by playing games.

Playing games in Digitalkoot fixes mistakes in our index of old
Finnish newspapers. This greatly increases the accuracy of text-based
searches of the newspaper archives.

We need your help

Most of the information in the library's newspaper archives has
already been copied into computer databases using computerized text
recognition. The problem is that computers fail to recognize all the
words. Especially when the quality of the source material is poor, the
results need to be fixed by hand. This requires a lot of manual work.

At the moment, when you play games in Digitalkoot you help correct
words. Later this year you will also be able to help structure the
documents and tag images.

Background

The National Library of Finland is the biggest and oldest scientific
library in Finland. It is responsible for preserving our cultural
heritage and ensuring that people can access it. The National Library
has already copied about 4 million pages into computer databases,
including newspapers, maps and other valuable documents.

In order to make this material accessible, it must be easily
searchable. By participating in Digitalkoot you are making Finnish
culture more accessible for all us
