Upplýsing, The Icelandic Association of Library and Information
Science, The University of Iceland, Department of Library and
Information Studies and The Association of Directors of Public Libraries
in Iceland invite you to a conference on the future of public libraries,
October 22 - 23, 2008. The venue is the well known conference hotel
Grand Hotel in Reykjavík, Iceland.
The main goal of public libraries has always been to serve the general
public and provide easy access to information, education and recreation.
As such, the public library is a social agent that plays an important
role in every society. The public librarians must react to the
developments in society, lead new developments and adjust their services
to the population at each point in time.
Without question it can be said that serious changes are now taking
place in western societies. Technology is affecting the provision of
information by making it easier for people to access necessary
information and recreation from home through the home computer. The flow
of people from one country to another is increasingly becoming the norm
and public libraries have to respond to the needs of a new clientele.
What are the social changes that public librarians need to cope with?
What will be the role of public libraries in the future? How can public
librarians respond to new and ever changing demands and adjust library
activities to fit a changing society? How can library schools and
educational institutions provide public librarians with the necessary
training to enable them to adjust their institutions and offer
appropriate services at each given time? These are some of the questions
that will be addressed at this two day conference.
The conference will focus on three main themes:
Social changes in western societies
The public library as a social agent
Educating public librarians for future roles
The speakers come from the USA, Canada, Great Britain, the Nordic
Countries and Baltic States. By bringing together specialists with
different backgrounds and different roles, it is expected that a
brilliant discussion will take place where people share their views and
experiences, and help us focus on the role of public libraries of the
future.
We look forward to seeing you all in Iceland October 22 and 23, 2008.
