The Future is here: Are we prepared?
New thinking in education for public librarians
The public library has as its main goal to serve the general public and
provide it with information and recreation. As such it is a social agent
that has an important role in each society. The public librarians must react
to developments in society and adjust their services to the population at
each point in time.
Without question there are serious changes taking place in Western
Societies. Technology is affecting the provision of information and making
it easier for people to access necessary information and recreation from
home, through the home computer. The flow of people from one country to
another is becoming constantly more the norm and the public libraries need
to respond to the needs of new clientele.
What are the social changes that public librarians need to cope with? What
will be the role of public libraries in the future? How can public
librarians respond to constantly new demands and adjust their activities to
fit an ever changing society? How can library schools or educational
institution provide the public librarians with the necessary training to
adjust their institutions to provide the appropriate services? These are
some of the question that will be addressed at this two-day conference.
Upplýsing, The Icelandic Library Association, the University of Iceland,
Department of Library and Information Studies and the Association of
Directors of Public Libraries in Iceland invite to this important conference
October 22-23, 2008. The venue is the well known conference hotel Grand
Hotel in Reykjavik, Iceland.
The conference will be focusing on three main themes:
· Social Changes in Western Societies
· The Public Library as a Social Agent
· Educating Public Librarians for Future Roles
The speakers come from the USA, Canada, Great Britain, the Nordic countries
and Balticum. By bringing together specialists with different backgrounds
and different roles, it is expected that a brilliant discussion will take
place when people share their views and experiences that will help focusing
on the role of public libraries of the future.
We look forward to seeing you all in Iceland in October 22-23 2008.
