Information World Review har en artikel om att två högre chefer lämnat Elsevier för Biomed Central
"Elsevier duo say the future is open"
http://www.iwr.co.uk/information-world-review/news/2171597/elsevier-duo-say-future-open
En av dom säger:
“The cost of publishing to research communities is too high. Once we all get into open access we can start competing properly. We are seeing lots of publishers trialling OA as they are under pressure from funding *agencies, such as* <http://www.iwr.co.uk/information-world-review/news/2158434/wellcome-trust-digitisation> * RCUK and Wellcome Trust* <http://www.iwr.co.uk/information-world-review/news/2158434/wellcome-trust-digitisation>, which want to see greater value from the research they fund.”
Ett annat positivt tecken på att marknadens total dominans över den vetenskapliga informationsförsörjningen har börjat brytas är en i dagarna publicerad rapport från University of California Libraries:
"The Promise of Value-based Journal Prices and Negotiation"
http://libraries.universityofcalifornia.edu/cdc/valuebasedprices.pdf
Bakgrund:
Comprehensive access to the expanding volume of scholarly materials necessary for research and teaching is at risk. Trends in scholarly publishing, especially commercial publisher business models that result in the high rates of subscription price increases of the cost of scholarly material, limit the ability to maintain the breadth and depth of library collections and reduce exposure to, and impact of, scholars’ work. The University of California Libraries are key actors in the university’s response to the economic dysfunctions of scholarly communication systems,2 developing a program of strategic actions to produce change.
Redan för några år sedan utmanade dom elva californiska biblioteken den globala förlagsindustrin vilket inspirerat många bibliotek och konsortier över hela världen att våga säga nej till orimliga priser och villkor, nu senast i Norge.
