Jag vill tipsa om en intressant artikel i den fria tidskriften
First Monday av Paul N. Courant: "Scholarship and
Academic Libraries (and their kin) in the World of
Google" som redovisar vilka utmaningar som vi står inför.

En av dessa utmaningar är dom nya former av samarbete som
*måste* utvecklas:
In the world of digital archives (as in old–fashioned libraries)
essentially all of the cost is in the assembly and maintenance of the
material. In the digital world, where you can transmit material across
the globe for no cost, it is in the interest of no one place to do this
work. It is in everyone’s interest that /someone/ do it, so we are going
to have to develop a cooperative model among scholarly institutions and
their cousins (museums and other libraries) to get the job done. We do
not yet have this organized, although lots of people are working on it.
There will be a great deal of /quid pro quo/. And there will have to be
mechanisms to assure that the institutions that benefit most from this
set up pay their share, as they do now. Just how this will work is yet
quite unclear. Collective action is not easy, and, as I suggested
earlier, the value to individual universities of large local collections
(except for special collections) will become much reduced with
ubiquitous digitization.
Göteborgs UB har nu lagt in över 8000 fria e-böcker
i sin lokala katalog och i Libris vilka är tillgängliga för alla.
Om vi kunde samarbeta skulle vi naturligtvis ha mångdubbelt
mer.
Kunde vi dessutom öppna upp festung LIBRIS för import
av fria resurser skulle naturligtvis arbetet underlättas. Jag
ska ta ett exempel. Norwegian Open Research Archive,
NORA innehåller över 5000 forskningspublikationer. Vore
det inte kanon om dessa poster automatiskt tankades över
till LIBRIS och att motsvarande gjordes med svenska
resurser till BIBSYS? Det är tyvärr inte en enkel teknisk
fråga eftersom internationaliseringen av posternas utseende
inte har eftersträvats utan varje land har sina egna smarta
lösningar som ska passa det nationella behovet. Globaliseringen
gör dock detta alltmer irrelevant tycker jag.
Sannolikt har Courant helt rätt i att:
Except for the most arcane materials and users, that which is not
available online will simply not be read.
