In remote rural areas and where clean drinking water is not available,
people have to rely on alternative methods to clarify water for drinking
and other portable uses. One method is to use locally available
materials as natural coagulant and disinfectants.
This IOBB e-seminar presents a research study in Nigeria on the
coagulative and disinfective ability of seeds and biomass of plants
(e.g. Moringa oleifera, Jatropha curcas, Hibiscus sabdarifa) and fungi
(Pleurotus tuberregium) to clarify and disinfect water. Moringa and
Jatropha seeds and the calyx of Hibiscus sabdarifa can reduce the
bacterial counts drastically. All the plant materials exhibited
appreciable coagulative effect comparable to the chemical - alum. The
turbidity of treated water is also drastically reduced. The pH of
alum-treated water is acidic while natural material-treated water
samples remains neutral.
