APPOINTMENT OF THE DIRECTOR OF LIBRARIES

        AT BIELEFELD UNIVERSITY

                    from 01.04 2002

The library system of Bielefeld University provides about two million
volumes, a seating capacity of 2200 in the reading room and a staff of
137.

The library's integrated electronic information system is available at
150 publicly accessible PCs in the library, on the intranet throughout
the university and on the internet. The library played a key role in the

establishment and technical development of North Rhine-Westphalia's
digital library.

The University of Bielefeld has created a modern, internet-based
information system which it will continue to develop. The University of
Bielefeld is re-structuring its IT-organisation to achieve greater
integration and distribution of resources. The library is expected to
contribute towards new cross-sectional developments in the university.

The new library director should focus on the further development of the
information service. This will include the customer-oriented
optimization of existing systems and their innovative adaptation to keep

pace with changing requirements and services.

The applicant will be flexible and open-minded, will have senior
management experience and the considerable organisational talent
required to cope with the multi-faceted information needs of a
university. The applicant must be familiar with the organisation of
electronic services and have above-average commitment, cooperation and
teamwork skills, persuasiveness, assertiveness and resilience. The
applicant will have the qualifications required for senior posts in
academic libraries. A good knowledge of German or to learn German in a
short period is essential.
