RAJU2001 seminar - Structured editing, and metadata

SGML and XML are markup languages for presenting information as structured
documents, see e.g. Airi Salminen, Summary of the XML Family of W3C
Languages [1], and The XML Cover Pages [2]. SGML/XML are sometimes also
called enabling technologies. To cite Oxford English Dictionary:
Enable, v. To supply with the requisite means or opportunities to
an end or for an object
Markup languages do not, by themselves, give off-the-shelf answers to
questions related to, say, electronic publishing or how to find
information. They provide an opportunity. An opportunity to take a look at
the information from a more abstract level. Not as pages or lines, but as
packets with a label. When information is "tagged", it means you have
classified its distinct logical elements. It is like turning your
information into a miniature library, searchable, retrievable, usable.
RAJU2001 is a 1-day event with two themes: SGML/XML editing, and metadata.
Both themes are highlighted from two perspectives: practical case studies,
and research findings. RAJU2001 gratefully acknowledges the contribution
of all invited speakers, representing rich expertise in their respective
fields.
RAJU2001 is organised jointly by Oulu University Library, SGML Users'
Group of Finland, and do-re-mi research group/TYTTI project at University
of Helsinki.
The language of the seminar is English.

Fees
The program of the seminar, possible handouts, and morning/afternoon tea
or coffee is free of charge for the participants. Lunch at your own
expense.
Venue
The seminar venue is the auditorium of the Lifelong Learning Institute
Dipoli of Helsinki University of Technology in Otaniemi, Espoo. Please
consult the map of the Otaniemi area [3] (Dipoli is #26), and instructions
of how to get there [4]. Fastest connections, c. 15 minutes, from the
Helsinki bus station are 102 and 103, platform 51. Fee is 17 FIM, and you
can buy single tickets from the driver.

About RAJU
RAJU dates back to 1998 when four university units established a joint
12-month project organization to promote the idea of structured publishing
(ie RAkenteinen JUlkaiseminen in Finnish). The Units were Digital Media at
the University of Jyväskylä, Oulu University Library, Vaasa University
Library, and Helsinki University of Technology Library. After three
seminars, one publication, and a discussion list, RAJU is no more a
project - it is a brand :)! Seriously, from time to time, RAJU will pop
up as a name of occasional events that deal with electronic publishing
issues in Finnish university settings.
