INVITATION TO "THE UNIVERSAL REPOSITORY LIBRARY
AND THE GUARANTEES FOR THE SUSTAINABILITY OF THE DIGITAL COPY"
International Conference to be held in Kuopio,
Finland, 29th and 30th October 2009
Place: Taitemia, Piispankatu 8, Kuopio, Finland
The Kuopio conferences commenced identifying the
problems which library repositories had in
storing and preserving print resources. Through
the first two Kuopio conferences they recognized
that the problem was not with the local library,
nor with the local or national repository but
with the need for a global coordination, the
Universal Repository Library (URL).
The Third Kuopio conference extends this
examination of the crucial responsibility in the
preservation of the world's literatures. Where
the digital environment correctly is being
identified as the future medium of preference,
the free availability of a rich historical
research collection from all languages and
cultures is an increasingly prominent importance.
The URL sharply recognizes that print is with us
forever, and the desired delivery vehicle is not
necessarily digital. It also announces that there
are rich and vital collections across all
languages which should be included in this target.
This conference provides a real and sharp
opportunity to address these issues from any
number of perspectives. Keynote speakers are
Steve O'Connor, University Librarian, The Hong
Kong Polytechnic University, Derek Law,
Professor, University of Strathclyde, Scotland
and Kai Ekholm, Director of the National Library of Finland.
You are invited to contribute to and attend this
conference as one of the continuing opportunities
to focus on these very important issues. The
language of the conference is English.
Welcome to Kuopio!

The National Repository Library of Finland was
founded on March the 1st, 1989. It is meant to be
a repository to be shared by all libraries in
Finland as the most economical way of storing
library material. Thus the need for building
space for library collections is decreased and
can be controlled. The material in the Repository
Library is received as transfer from other
Finnish libraries and becomes the property of the Library.
